Project Brief:

To Manufacture a full car set of fully functional lamp assemblies to show car standard, along with plastic wheel covers, transparent mirror bodies and semi-transparent, one-piece front grille.

Wheels:

The individual spokes of the "alloy wheels" were produced as PU vacuum castings from SL masters and silicone tools, painted a metallic graphite colour and assembled to an aluminium hub and steel rim, giving the illusion of a robust, cast alloy.

Door Mirrors:

Master patterns were machined from acrylic with a highly polished surface finish, before producing silicone tools and clear PU castings.

The one piece mirror housings were tinted to create a smoke effect and suggest a continuation of the windows. Within the mirror housing sits a vacuum metalised "chrome" floating, cone, on which the actual mirror is fixed.

Front Grille:

The full width grille is an interpretation of current Nissan styling, but this grille is a one piece clear epoxy casting, produced from a CNC master and silicone tooling. The ribs on the back of the grille are fully visible through the clear polished front face, creating an optical illusion of depth and form.

Front Lights:

Fully CNC machined cans and lenses, painted and polished with vacuum metalised reflectors. The light source is a combination of Superbrite LEDs around a Luxion Star for the main beam and a flexible LED array for the "halo" side lights.

Front Running Lights:

Again the cans were CNC machined from ABS and the lenses and light guides were machined from acrylic. The "wave" design directional indicator is cast PU from silicone tooling. The whole assembly was vacuum metalised and then lacquered to achieve a dark chrome effect, in keeping with the overall styling.

Rear Lights:

This innovative lamp units were machined from ABS, vacuum metalised and lacquered. The lenses were machined from acrylic with the internal lens tinted red with lacquer and the external lens smoked. The illumination is via optical fibres with a single central light source. The fibres feed up through a loom with 127 individual strands per side, emitting through custom made tubular holders to position the light just below the surface of the lens.

Application:

For display at the Geneva motorshow and for the production of promotional material.

Case Study

From QAZANA Concept to JUKE Production

It's not often that a new production car is released which closely resembles it's concept version, but Nissan have done it again!

The Nissan Qazana was one of the stars of last year's Geneva Motor Show where it received rave reviews. The striking, ‘funky' design is dominated by large, wide wheel arches and a lower shape which gives a feeling of strength, while the upper body is dynamic, assertive and sporty. The Nissan Qazana is a five-door, with the rear doors opening backwards once the front doors have been opened, in the style of 'suicide doors'. The radical interior includes a centre console inspired by a motorcycle fuel tank and seat.

The new Nissan Juke, built at the Sunderland plant, should be available to buy later this month and as with it's phenomenally successful big brother, the Qashqai, the Juke will retain many of the key styling features from the ground breaking Crossover Concept, including the motorcycle inspired centre console, boomerang rear lights, the unusual split headlights with the indicator, sidelights and LED running lights all mounted high on the wings, and the main beams below the grille.

Inevitably a number of exterior features such as the suicide doors, 20-inch wheels and the unique, transparent wing mirrors with a forward-facing opening which directs the airflow around the back of the glass, improving the aerodynamics, will not make it to the production version, but if Nissan have got everything right, then this could be equally as successful as the Qashqai.

Paragon were heavily involved in the production of the Qazana concept vehicle, working alongside Nissan's designers and Concept Manufacturer to develop most of the exterior plastic components including the wheel covers, front grille, wing mirrors and all of the external lighting units.

Innovative solutions were developed to realise the vision of Nissan's UK design team and as well as utilising their proven technologies of Stereolithograpy, Selective Laser Sintering, CNC Machining and Vacuum Casting, Paragon's team had to tackle fibre optics along with LED technologies, once again delivering a high quality solution on time.

NISSAN QAZANA

The Automotive Industry is constantly in the headlines with reduced sales, redundancies and plant closures, but Nissan see a brighter future.

Building on the success of the Qashqai and recently introduced Qashqai+2, Nissan plan to launch a new crossover model to be built at the Sunderland plant when production of the Micra ceases next year.

Paragon were heavily involved in the production of the concept vehicle, working alongside Concept Group International. The vehicle was built from scratch by CGi, as a GRP shell over a welded subframe, utilising a donor engine and drive train. Paragon's services were called upon for the manufacture of all of the exterior "plastic" parts.
